“Being of the older generation, working protocol was much more relaxed in my day. You could, quite literally, walk into a job without the formality of job applications, psychometric assessments, group role plays and three month trial periods. There is still a vital symmetry, though, that featured all those years ago and that still features today. Believe it or not, School Career Advisers existed in 1961! It was my Career Adviser that arranged an appointment for me to attend at a local company when I was aged only 14.

On the appointed day, I turned up for my meeting. I walked round and round, trying to find a way into the building where I thought I was supposed to be but there was no access. Whilst standing there, probably looking a little bemused, a gentleman approached me and asked what I was doing. I told him that I was supposed to be at an interview but I couldn’t even get into the building. It turned out that this gentleman was a manager from a company close by and he decided to interview me on the spot. The next thing I knew I was offered a job. That is where my upholstery career started.

I completed a five year apprenticeship and built up my upholstery experience with different companies. Then, some 13 years later, I took the decision to become self-employed. To date, I am still self-employed and can honestly say it was the best move I made. Not only do I answer to me and me alone, I created a business for the whole family. My wife, all of my children and, more recently, my grandchild, have been part of the business at some time or other and I have been in the privileged position of being able to pass on my knowledge. To be able to teach your own son a craft that provides self-sufficiency, work satisfaction and flexibility is the best gift I could have ever hoped to have given him.

There are no plans for retirement just yet, as I love what I do and I am still good at what I do. However, when I do decide full-time work doesn’t suit my lifestyle any longer, I am safe in the knowledge that I can scale-down my operation when I want to, at a rate I want to and however I want to. After all, I am the boss!”
